A battle scene from Queen Mary's Psalter, early 1300's.  Note the two distinct falchion forms and the oval shield on the far right. Note the straight thrust rather than cutting blow being employed. Below note the decapitated heads, the dismembered arm, leg and …a headless face on the far right!
