| Insights from Historical Artwork Another
image of the mid 1400s from Das Mittelaterliche Hausbuch ("The Medical
Housebook"). Perhaps originally from a deck of playing cards, this work is by
the same anonymous artist (perhaps one "Master E. S." from the 1460's) as the
previous watercolor and shows strong resemblances. In this case the swordsman on the
left is wearing no armor and interestingly leads with his left leg in what appears to be a
right side Ochs (Ox or hanging guard). The pair are also much closer together than
in the watercolor version and no center figure with staff is present. The top
pair may very likely be doing gymnastic exercises rather than wreslting.
